American Airlines

Carry-on Allowance "You are allowed one carry-on bag and one personal item.
• All carry-on pieces, including laptops, must fit either underneath the seat in front of you or in an overhead bin.
• The one carry-on bag must fit in an overhead compartment or under the seat. It should not exceed 45 linear inches (length + width + height) or weigh more than 40 lbs/18 kg.
• Carry-on items which appear too large or irregularly shaped to fit under a seat, in an overhead compartment, or in a closet will not be accepted as carry-on baggage and will need to be checked.
• At times, additional limits may be placed on carry-on baggage based on the main cabin stowage capacity of specific aircraft."
Checked Baggage Allowance American Airlines allows you two pieces of checked baggage within the following permissible limits:

  • Domestic - 1 piece, maximum weight 23Kg, maximum size 45in.
  • International - 2 piece, maximum weight 23Kg, maximum size 62in.
"Customers who purchased domestic economy class tickets May 12, 2008, through June 14, 2008, may check one bag for free and check a second bag for $25 each way. Customers who purchase domestic economy class tickets on or after June 15, 2008, will be charged $15 each way for the first checked bag and $25 each way for the second checked bag."

The following customers will not be charged a service fee to check a bag provided the bag is within the weight allowance:
  • For the first checked bag, customers who buy a ticket before June 15, 2008, or who fly before June 15, 2008
  • For the second checked bag, customers who purchased a ticket before May 12, 2008
  • Customers traveling on an international itinerary to destinations beyond the U.S., the U.S. Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, or Canada
  • Customers who purchase full-fare tickets in Economy Class
  • Customers who purchase Business or First Class tickets
  • Customers flying on AA code share flights not operated by American Airlines, American Eagle or American Connection®
  • Customers traveling on government or military fares
  • Military passengers on active duty
  • AAdvantage Executive Platinum®, AAdvantage Platinum® or AAdvantage Gold® members
  • one world Alliance Emerald, Sapphire or Ruby members
  • Customers flying on the same reservation as an AAdvantage Executive Platinum, AAdvantage Platinum or AAdvantage Gold member or one world Alliance Emerald, Sapphire or Ruby member regardless of frequent flier status or fare type (not applicable to group bookings)
  • AAnytime® Economy Class AAdvantage award tickets, MileSAAver(SM) or AAnytime First and Business Class AAdvantage award tickets
  • First and Business Class upgrades confirmed prior to check in AAirpass travel
Excess Baggage Rules If your baggage exceeds American Airlines’ permissible limits of free baggage allowance, you’re required to pay additional fee based on quantity, weight and size. For bags weighing 51-70 lb, you’ll be charged an additional amount of $25, and for bags between 71- 100 lb, the fee is $50. There is a fee of $80 for every bag between 63-115 linear inches. Bags weighing over 100 lbs and 115 linear inches are not accepted. The rates for additional pieces of baggage are- $80 each for 1-3 pieces, $105 each for 4-6 pieces and $180 each for over 7 pieces.

If you are unable to locate a checked bag upon arrival, you should notify an American Airlines/American Eagle baggage service agent prior to leaving the airport. At that time, you will be given a Baggage Claim ID and a brochure explaining the baggage recovery process. Sports Equipment For sports equipments like surfboards, cycles etc, you’re required to pay a fixed handling fee. Please refer to the American Airlines website for detailed guidelines.
Comments Some destinations outside of the continental U.S. (as well as travel from Los Angeles to Miami and Fort Lauderdale) have additional limitations on checked baggage at specific times of the year. This is called an "embargo". Please contact an American Airlines representative at 1-800-433-7300 to see if a baggage embargo is applicable for your itinerary and travel dates.
